image This has got to be one for the books. Not only is this year’s screenings the speediest to complete, it also did away with the usual triple extension of deadlines. And all in under a week’s work. And I am loving the rush to beat the deadline BPCI set so as not to get tangled with the nationwide celebration of the Papal Visit starting January 15.

And so, without further ado – from the sixty-five pre-filtered applicants who screened – here now are the thirty-four (34) Official Candidates of Bb. Pilipinas 2015 in random order:

Pia Wurtzbach
Kylie Verzosa
Christi Lynn McGarry
Kimverlyn Suiza
Teresita Sen Marquez
Christine Balaguer
Namrata Neesha Murjani
Marvi Ann de Lima
Alaiza Flor Malinao
Ann Lorraine Colis
Justine Felizarta
Brenna Cassandra Gamboa
Enrica Roxiele Guieb
Paula Rich Bartolome
Hannah Ruth Sison
Rogelie Catacutan
Mae Liezel Ramos
Patricia Lae Ejercitado
Anja-Vanessa Peter
Janicel Lubina
Nancy Lee Leonard
Ina Dominica Guerrero
Tanya Angelica Nicole Hyde
Anabel Christine Tia
Crissa Marie Mendiola

image After the announcement of the Thirty-Four (34) Bb. Pilipinas 2015 Official Candidates last night at Balay in Araneta Center, all sorts of interesting angles on the chosen contenders suddenly appeared. There are the pageant crossovers, the repeaters, the double repeaters, the camp crossovers and the number of ladies successfully entered by both Aces & Queens and Kagandahang Flores.

But what will make the 2015 batch a little more unique is the presence of all the First Runners-Up of the Top 3 National Pageants in the Philippines. And this trio – Bb. Pilipinas 2013 1st Runner-up Pia Wurtzbach, Miss World Philippines 2013 1st Princess Janicel Lubina and Miss Philippines-Air 2013 Kimverlyn Suiza – will battle it out for the five crowns at stake.

Who will be the most successful among Pia, Janicel and Kimverlyn? Well, it’s too early to tell at this point. But whoever will leave the most indelible mark/s in the eyes of the finals night judges certainly will, aside from being tagged among BPCI’s preferred winners.

Good luck to all three! ;-)

P.S. Thanks to my friend Mark Besana for inspiring me to write this Sunday Special post. :-)

When Ali Forbes failed to make it as an Official Candidate of Bb. Pilipinas 2015 last night, my heart went out for her. It wasn’t just because she should’ve already been a shoo-in after placing as 2nd Runner-Up during Bb. Pilipinas 2012 (and later on promoted to 1st Runner-Up after Elaine Kay Moll was given the title of Miss Supranational Philippines 2012). The girl simply wants to give the nationals another try before finally leaving her colorful pageant career behind. After all, once a Binibini, always a Binibini. And if it is in her fate to nail a crown, then so be it. Otherwise, she will have no regrets or what-ifs when she looks back in the future and asks questions that she can no longer have clear answers to if she didn’t make the second attempt.

Watch her glorious moment during the Bb. Pilipinas 2012 Finals.

courtesy of Beauty Pageant Channel

But her big dream was nipped in the bud less than 12 hours ago as this post was uploaded. I can share all the songs she has sung in all her previous lounge gigs to reflect the kind of emotions she must be feeling right now (a lot of them could be applicable amyways) . But I decided to go with one video where she is being shown singing “Going Out of My Head” during a bar set. The song is so apt if the wishful recipient is the Bb. Pilipinas crown.

Chin up, Ali!

There could be a different kind of silver lining out in the sky for you. It may not be visible by way of a Bb. Pilipinas crown, but it will most likely be something else that should make for the still-fresh heartbreak. :-)

Pilipinas 2015 statistics for three (3) groups are now in place. Simply put, Aces & Queens garnered a total of fifteen (15) successful qualifiers in the roster, Kagandahang Flores was able to enter sixteen (16) contenders and R-L Angels chipped in two (2) entries. Tall and tan and young and lovely. The adjectives fit her well.

And at a veritable height of 5’11”, Christi Lynn Landrito McGarry is one of the two tallest Official Candidates in Bb. Pilipinas 2015 (the other one being six-footer Crissa Mae Mendiola). She held the title of Mutya ng Pilipinas Asia-Pacific 2010 and represented the country in that year’s edition of Miss Intercontinental. In Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, she left quite a good impression, enough to make her a part of the Top 15 and declared as Queen of Asia-Oceania. Watch her crowning moment during Mutya 2010.

This year, 24 year-old Christi Lynn could be one of the designated spoilers of Aces & Queens for the crowns at stake. For obvious reasons, she can no longer be considered a potential successor to Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental Kris Tiffany Janson. But still, there will be at least four more titles to vie for. And this statuesque Fil-American beauty is more than pumped up to give the competition her best shot. She has already fulfilled the residency requirements of BPCI so there should no longer be cause for concern in that regard. All she has to do is to focus on the challenge at hand.

And now, here’s one more look at Christi Lynn L. McGarry.

Mia during the Bb. Pilipinas 2015 screening

Mia during the Bb. Pilipinas 2015 screening

Back in 2007, Mia Allyson Hernandez Howell was a member of the women’s fencing team that represented the Philippines during the SEA (Southeast Asian) Games held in Thailand. She won the Silver in the Women’s Team Foil Event along with teammates Michelle Mencenido, Veena Tessa Nuestro and Ma. Dinah Remolacio. But her athletic background is now part of the past. She pursued her tertiary studies more religiously and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, got work with the office of Secretary Mar Roxas and is actually applying to study Law at Stanford University when the call from Kagandahang Flores to train and screen for Bb. Pilipinas 2015 came. Perhaps, before her age becomes ineligible for the pageant, she decided to give it sufficient time before resuming life outside of the competition.

At the moment, you can’t see any traces of the fencer in this beauty anymore. But her sharp mind and articulate self remain strong. And I daresay that she could be one of the best speakers among the candidates.

Bb. Pilipinas 2015: Counting Numbers

wpid-wp-1420877800829.jpeg One more interesting part of the Bb. Pilipinas every year is the assigning of numbers to the Official Candidates. Some people say that there is significance behind the particular digit/s that a contender receives, such as #1 is vital because she will lead the rest in most appearances or the last digits represent someone who is just as important as #1 because she tail-ends the batch and should encourage a resounding applause after she presents herself. Personally, I always follow the practice that the middle numbers are the tallest, with the first and last as the shortest. Whatever. Watch the vid below and see their individual pins. ;-)

The photo on the left shows how Binibini 6 of Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Anabel Christine Tia looked like when she first joined the nationals. Since then, she made the quick resolve to return for one more stint, but with a much improved version of herself. True to her words, she prepared herself for a comeback, stayed low profile from April to December, gave your blogger quick hints on how she is doing and finally made the appearance during the Bb. Pilipinas 2015 screenings last week.

Now that she is an Official Candidate once more, Bel promises to do 100% better than the last. And her pictures below should give you an idea regarding the transformation.

Miss Cebu 2013 Namrata Neesha Murjani will turn 22 this coming January 17. And she wants nothing more for a birthday wish than to achieve a good placement in Bb. Pilipinas 2015.

Namrata Neesha Murjani was born and raised in Cebu practically all her life. And her parents – an Indian father and a Filipina mother – made sure that she is reared in the best values of both cultures. Last year, she completed a BS Biology degree at the Cebu Doctors University in preparation for Medicine Proper. But before she immerses herself in more studies and non-stop laboratory work, she decided to give pageantry a try to see if there is something bright waiting for her in this field. And Aces & Queens made sure that she got the best training for the nationals.

Binibini 33 is excited. She is looking forward to a great experience in the competition. And if Neesha is fated to win a crown, then her dreams of studying to become a Doctor might have to wait just a little more. ;-)

Switching camps is nothing new in local pageantry. And I don’t see major issues in it for as long as the individuals involved went through the right process of asking permission from the camp to be left in favor of a new one. Just like in the TV network wars, the practice of talents seeking greener pasture somewhere else should no longer be a big professional problem. Once contracts have been served, they should be free to go where the offers are more lucrative or the projects a sustenance of income.

Take for example third-time joiner Toni Alyessa Hipolito (previously of Aces & Queens) and MWP2012 4th Princess Brenna Cassandra Gamboa (previously of Kagandahang Flores). Just in time for preparations prior to Bb. Pilipinas 2015 screenings, these two ladies decided that it was high time to move on, considering that this edition should be their last eligible years to participate. Permissions were properly granted, albeit with a heavy heart which is just expected.

image

And now that they are in the arms of handlers who were previously on the other side of the fence, my only wish is for them to find what they are looking for.

Toni now for KF. Brenna now for A&Q.

Best of luck to you, ladies! :-)

Teresita Sen Marquez? Try WynWyn Marquez

Bb. Pilipinas 2015 Official Candidate #34 Teresita Sen Marquez, aka Wynwyn Marquez

Bb. Pilipinas 2015 Official Candidate #34 Teresita Sen Marquez, aka Wynwyn Marquez

wynwyn21 Showbiz personalities joining beauty pageants is always a newsworthy item for reporters and entertainment writers. And why not? There is a heightened level of interest in an individual’s capacity to invade an almost-parallel industry to find out if she is cut out for the demands of the new environment. In the past, Sharmaine Ruffa Gutierrez proved that it was possible for a relatively popular actress to join Bb. Pilipinas, win a crown and then return to the glamor and glitz of TV and Movies.

Enter Teresita Sen Marquez. Teresita who, some might ask. Well, try WynWyn Marquez and there is greater possibility of identifying the person right away. The GMA-7 exclusive artist who – in the past number of years – dabbled in dancing and acting on the small screen, has already penetrated the national pageant. She is now Binibini 34 of Bb. Pilipinas 2015, courtesy of Aces & Queens.

And mind you, WynWyn is not coming in without sufficient pedigree tucked under her belt. Apart from being the daughter of Actor/Comedian Joey Marquez and former Actress Alma Moreno, she is the niece of Miss International 1979 Melanie Marquez. She may not have the towering height of her aunt, but there will always be the potential to follow footsteps and see if the same fate could also be in the offing for her. Besides, the young Marquez used to do ballet before specializing in jazz dancing, so that should serve some good purpose in her moves and posture.

image

Binibini 34 Teresita Sen Marquez

What lies ahead for WynWyn in the pageant? It’s still hard to tell at this point. But if she can show the strong will and determination to win (and put them into action), then there might just be something in the horizon for her. ;-)

Binibini 3 Ria Rabajante for Bb. Pilipinas 2015

image

Ria is more prepared in her 2nd Bb. Pilipinas attempt

Back in 2013, Ria Rabajante made quite a splash when she took part in Bb. Pilipinas Gold. Tongues were wagging as to where this knockout dusky beauty came from and who was backing her up. Well, her trainers never changed. She is still the same R-L Angel pinned as Binibini 1 before. But just like the number she is wearing right now, the girl is 3x the sophisticated fierceness and 3x more prepared for the demands of the nationals. In fact, she took more than a year and a half before finally making the decision to enlist in Bb. Pilipinas 2015. Last year, she busied herself with work at Captured Dream Productions for the inaugural edition of Miss Teen Earth and Little Miss Earth Philippines where she did PR as well as being the big sister of all the young candidates.

But enough of that, for now. Ria is dead-set on performing better and stronger. And if she comes on as less daring in styling now, it could be due to a game plan to turn into a more timeless Filipina maiden who has what it takes to exude a favorable appeal in the global pageant circuit.

image

Ria showing off her sexy curves during the final screening

Could this be her year to fulfill the dream of winning a crown? Possibly. No, make that very possibly. ;-)

Binibini 9 Kimberle Mae Pancho has already decided to withdraw from the competition

image Casualty #1 for Bb. Pilipinas 2015: Binibini 9 Kimberle Mae Penchon

The Kagandahang Flores entry from the Cordilleras has now withdrawn from the competition. She was offered a business opportunity with Beauche International. And since pursuing the same will give rise to conflicts with being an Official Candidate, she must have decided to go for the income-generating chance which may no longer be available in a couple of months’ time.

Good luck with your decision, Kimberle Mae. It may not be an easy one, but if it will be for the common good of you and your loved ones, then I believe that you did the right thing.

One down. Who will take her place?

Bb. Pilipinas 2015: My Early Top 15

wpid-wp-1420877800829.jpeg After sitting down and devoting an entire hour studying the Thirty-Four (34) Official Candidates of Bb. Pilipinas 2015, I fully realized how difficult this year’s competition is going to be. Just when I thought I came up with the best combo of potential winners, I ended up scratching my head after missing one or two who also deserve to be in the highest tier.

So I decided to simplify matters. For now.

I came up with the Fifteen (15) ladies who have always wowed me and those who started wowing me since the days of final screening.

image

1. Pia Wurtzbach, 2. Hannah Ruth Sison, 3. Kylie Verzosa, 4. Janicel Lubina, 5. Alaiza Flor Malinao

image

6. Mae Liezel Ramos, 7. Kimverlyn Suiza, 8. Rogelie Catacutan, 9. Justine Felizarta, 10. Christi Lynn McGarry, 11. Anabel Christine Tia, 12. Teresita Sen Marquez, 13. Crissa Mae Mendiola, 14. Ria Rabajante, 15. Neesha Murjani

As of this date, my Top 5 would be Pia Wurtzbach, Hannah Ruth Sison, Kylie Verzosa, Janicel Lubina and Alaiza Flor Malinao. Fast climbing up the rankings are Mae Liezel Ramos, Kimverlyn Suiza, Rogelie Catacutan, Justine Felizarta and Christi Lynn McGarry. Completing my running 15 are Anabel Christine Tia, Teresita Sen Marquez, Crissa Mae Mendiola, Ria Rabajante and Neesha Murjani.

Now, if your bet’s name and photo are not included above, hold your horses.

I can assure you.

This list will get shuffled as the Pre-Pageant activities start heating up. One or two may slide down, another one or two can still go up. Disappearance/s can be inevitable. Very easily.

So let’s see who will remain consistent, who will lose steam, who will suddenly rise and who will always be on top. ;-)

Justine Felizarta: A fully-justified Bb. Pilipinas 2015 Official Candidate

Binibini 23 Justine Beatrice Felizarta

Binibini 23 Justine Beatrice Felizarta

justinef21 Why is Justine Felizarta “fully justified”? Well, I know part of her back story before reaching this point of being pinned as Binibini 23 of Bb. Pilipinas 2015.

Back in 2013, Justine was just a young beautiful girl in Vancouver who dreamt of becoming a beauty queen someday. Encouraged by her family, she took a flight to Manila and formally presented herself to Aces & Queens for possible consideration as one of its pageant trainees. But it was already too late to be enlisted for Bb. Pilipinas 2014. Besides, she hasn’t fulfilled BPCI’s residency requirement yet.

So what she did after was to set her sights on Bb. Pilipinas 2015, lived in the Philippines, absorb its culture and immersed herself into training. She even took part in Miss Manila 2014 just to get a taste of local competitions.

Hard work really paid off for Justine. Her nicely-proportioned and toned body is already one proof. (Photo credit: Joselito Caleon)

Ever the dutiful student, Justine patiently waited and dedicated herself to this year’s edition. And when it was time to finalize her preparations, she already possessed the right disposition for the nationals. And the rest is history.

The fully-localized version of the Fil-Canadian girl is now Binibini 23. And she is all set to conquer the objective – to win a Bb. Pilipinas crown.

Good luck, Justine! :-)

This half-Filipina, half-German beauty is currently trying her luck in Bb. Pilipinas 2015 after undergoing intensive training and preparations under Kagandahang Flores.

As a teenager, Anja was an ITF-ranked junior tennis player who played the international circuit with some success.

And now that she is already aged 26 years and competing for an entirely different kind of recognition, Anja is hopeful that the outcome would be just as fulfilling, if not exceedingly better.

Can she serve a powerful ace in the contest? What do you think, dear readers? ;-)

As Binibini 19 of Bb. Pilipinas 2014, Mae Liezel Ramos was almost at the cusp of placing high and making her province proud with her over-all performance. The competition was more than tough as she would find out, though.

This year, Bicolana and repeater Mae Liezel Ramos has been assigned the number 13 for Bb. Pilipinas 2015. Will these digits bring her closer to the ultimate dream of nailing a crown in the ongoing edition of the nationals? Or do you get the feeling that she was far more fierce and well within her fighting zone before when she eventually made it to the Top 15 during the finals?

The girl is really giving her best, even better than her best if I may add. And she is hoping that a reward is waiting for her at the finish line. :-)

christinebalaguer31 Binibini 5 Christine Ramos Balaguer now holds the honor of being the first deaf Official Candidate of Bb. Pilipinas. And she is overjoyed with being chosen as one of the competitors in this year’s edition. From etching a small name for herself as a Dragonboat rower to giving a respectable performance during Miss World Philippines 2014 where she made the Top 13, she is now upping the ante even more by vying for one of the crowns in the country’s premier pageant.

Sure, there is more effort spent in her Aces & Queens training. But being the quick learner that she is, Christine continues to prove that no amount of physical disability can ever prevent a fighter of a person from fulfilling her dreams.

Last year, pin number 25 proved to work wonders for the previous wearer MJ Lastimosa who went on to top Bb. Pilipinas 2014 and is now competing in Doral Miami for the 63rd Miss Universe Pageant.

This year, the girl who got the same pin is Rogelie Catacutan from KF and KF Cebu (courtesy of Jonas Borces). And while the number assignment is something that this Cebuana beauty may not be too mindful of, it creates a bit of interest if she can be made another winner of the same.

I know it’s quite a stretch to assume something out of the whole thing. But if we base things on how Rogelie has been transformed by her mentors, then chances of performing well aren’t really that far-fetched. ;-)

Binibini 27 Ina Dominica Guerrero

image After having made the rounds of Miss Philippines Earth 2012 and Miss World Philippines 2014 – aside from screening for Bb. Pilipinas 2013 where she missed the Official Candidates cut – Ina Dominica Guerrero of Daraga, Albay finally made it to this year’s nationals. And she is now Binibini 27.

This Bicolana has come a long way, and she should be reaching full circle with Bb. Pilipinas 2015. Gone are the days in the province when she would sport long kinky hair in the regional beauty contests. And if her styling is still a work in progress for some, it’s because her perfect look is yet to be achieved. But if the screenings last week are to be used as gauge, she could be finally getting the best possible aura that balances her dusky color with a mildly fairer skin tone.

Let’s see if now is the right time for Ina to take her spot centerstage while proving her qualities in becoming a true Bb. Pilipinas. ;-)

image

After several stints in other national pageants, Bb. Pilipinas 2015 should be an acid test for her.
